[ARCHIVED] Teachers Release Birds For Education

1

Wednesday June 12, Mansfield ISD teachers participate in professional development training at Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center in Cedar Hill to learn new ways to incorporate adaptations into their fall curriculum. They release homing pigeons from Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center to Trinity River Audubon Center in southeast Dallas. Once the birds arrive at the Trinity River Audubon Center, the teachers will calculate the pigeons’ speed by utilizing wind direction and hypothesize about how the pigeons could decrease flight time.

In the fall students will visit Dogwood Canyon and Trinity River Audubon Center to participate in Eco Investigations, a four-hour expedition field trip that will provide inquiry-based, hands-on nature education in an immersed setting. Led by Audubon education staff, the students engage in scientific observation, nature study, and critical thinking.

Program activities include guided hikes, pond study, and exhibit hall exploration. All activities relate to local ecology and habitat study and are TEKS-linked for grades preK-5th. Each Eco-Investigation is supplemented with pre- and post-activities to strengthen learning and extend lessons into the classroom and home.

About Audubon Texas:Audubon’s mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earth’s biological diversity. Audubon Texas is the state program of the National Audubon Society, dedicated for 100 years to protecting birds, other wildlife, and their habitats. With chapters and partners we protect and manage colonial waterbird populations in every major bay system on the Texas Gulf Coast, identify and conserve the most important sites for birds statewide, and are working to reach 50,000 students annually through conservation education and stewardship action at three urban Audubon Centers. tx.audubon.org
