Running for City Office

Qualifications to Run for Office 

• Must be a United States Citizen
• Must be a registered voter in the City of Cedar Hill at the time of filing 
• A candidate must have been a resident of the state for 12 months and are resident of the City of Cedar Hill for 6 months preceding the deadline to file a candidate application
• Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
• Have not been determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be totally mentally incapacitated; or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote
• Have not been finally convicted of a felony from which the person has not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities
• Candidates must be nominated by a petition, in lieu of a filing fee.  Petitions must be signed by at least 25 registered voters of the City of Cedar Hill
• Application and Petition Forms must be filed together by the filing deadline with the City Secretary
• Must satisfy any other requirements prescribed by law for the office

Candidate Residency Requirements 

In accordance with the City's Charter, please note the following additional candidate residency requirements by Place.  

Mayor and City Council Places One and Four:  Candidates must reside within the corporate city limits of the City of Cedar Hill.

City Council Places Two and Three:  Candidates must reside on the west side of U.S. Highway 67, within the corporate city limits of the City of Cedar Hill, in either Dallas or Ellis County.

City Council Places Five and Six:  Candidates must reside on the east side of U.S. Highway 67, within the corporate city limits of the City of Cedar Hill, in either Dallas or Ellis County.

All places are elected at large.
